Why Networking is Key

I know, even the word ‘networking’ probably makes you feel a bit uneasy.

Honestly, it’s not as scary as it sounds. Just think of it more like ‘making new connections’.

Networking for me, is at the heart of how I create more work for my business. That’s why I think it’s an important topic for me to cover. I’ll be sharing my thoughts as well as some tips to help you too.

My aim for these blog posts is to share with you some of the knowledge that I’ve accumulated, whilst demystifying how to become a self‑employed artist.

What’s The Point?

Why do we need to network anyway?… Networking is key as it builds relationships, connections and awareness of who you are!

People work with and invest in those who they know, trust and like. The best way to reach these goals is to be proactive in getting yourself known.

Who Are You?

Can you explain what you do in a couple of concise sentences? Write it down and practice saying it out loud.

You might be nervous at first but as you practice you’ll gain confidence in telling people ‘what you do’.

If you’re clear as to what you specialise in, you’ll find more work coming your way that aligns with what you’re good at and passionate about.

Top Tips

• Go Alone
We often default to going to networking events with our best friend or partner. However, this can mean that we’re reluctant to spark a conversation with someone new. Try going alone next time and see if it helps you get out of your comfort zone.

• Think ‘how can I help you’
The last thing you want to do is enter a conversation thinking ‘how can I get work out of this’. It can make you seem like you have an ulterior motive and prevent you from making authentic connections. Instead flip the narrative to think ‘how can I help you’. How can you be of service to who you’re speaking to, enter the conversation with a genuine goal to help others.

• Don’t rule people out
Don’t be so quick to judge. Even if you think that someone isn’t interested, they may refer you to some work in the future. This is why it’s important to always show up professionally and with a positive attitude. The legacy you leave is slowly building your reputation. Be the kind of person that people want to work with.

Where?

I know the pandemic put a holt on in‑person networking, however there’s more ways than just face‑to‑face. A lot of interactions can be by chance too, so you can’t always expect to plan these things.
